Zandt, Townes Van - Abnormal Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title Abnormal
Label Normal
Abnormal was released one year after the 1997 death of Townes Van Zandt. Abnormal is a live acoustic release featuring songs recorded throughout Europe, and showcasing songs from throughout his career. Many fans prefer this stripped-down setting for Van Zandt’s music: intimate, personal, and palpable; there is no hiding the sorrow that exudes from these songs.  Abnormal is not the best Townes Van Zandt album by far, but it will not disappoint those who already love him. With Van Zandt gone, these stray recordings are all we have left.

Zandt, Townes Van - Be Here To Love Me (Soundtrack) Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title Be Here To Love Me (Soundtrack) (2CD)
Label Domino
Be Here to Love Me is the official soundtrack from a docmentary film by Margaret Brown about Townes Van Zandt. The music on these two discs is largely taken from Van Zandt’s catalog on Tomato, but there are a couple of live cuts and alternate versions of previously released cuts contributed by his longtime manager Harold F. Eggers. These include "Nothin’," "Black Crow Blues," and "To Live’s to Fly." There are a few bits of movie audio offered by Brown. In sum, this is a two-disc compilation that feels like a road trip through the songwriter’s life. There is love, drama, tragedy, and the aimless, relentless journey down the endless road winding its way through these songs, and in some ways, it’s the most unusual and eerily compelling compilation of Van Zandt tracks out there. It’s not definitive, but it doesn’t mean, nor need to be; it simply presents the man, the myth, and the magic of his gift. And that’s plenty. mpt to enhance and improve his musical legacy and awareness.

Zandt, Townes Van - For The Sake of The Song Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title For The Sake of The Song
Label
In spite of the occasionally misguided production, For the Sake of the Song remains a classic debut. These songs make clear that Van Zandt’s genius was already fully formed, and as both a composer and a performer he was a man of rare gifts; even when the backing threatens to drown him out, his gifts come shining through, and For the Sake of the Song was an auspicious debut offering from a talent of the first order.

Zandt, Townes Van - High, Low and In Between Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title High, Low and In Between
Label Omnivore
In 1972 Van Zandt cut two perfect albums, one of them being High, Low and in Between. Tomato Records’ owner Kevin Eggers, who was responsible for many of Van Zandt’s best records, produced this album with minimal backing that keeps the spotlight on Van Zandt’s vocals and his songwriting. The record includes "To Live Is to Fly," the song Van Zandt considered his best, "No Deal," an absurd hard luck blues, a couple of gospel songs, "Mr. Gold and Mr. Mud," one of his most baffling poetic tunes, and the title track, an aching tale of heartache and confusion.

Zandt, Townes Van - Highway Kind Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title Highway Kind
Label Normal
This collection of later, mostly live recordings is an intense, harrowing album that provides a fitting eulogy to the life and career of the legendary Texas songwriter. Run down by a lifetime of hard living, Van Zandt was a shaky, erratic performer in the last years of his life. Depending on the night and his mood, he could be either disturbingly off-kilter or hypnotically compelling. Fortunately, THE HIGHWAY KIND focuses on the latter; these performances will send shivers up your spine.

Zandt, Townes Van - In The Beginning Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title In The Beginning
Label Fat Possum
The songs on In The Beginning were recorded in his first Nashville recording sessions in 1966 --predating the release of For The Sake Of The Song by two years. Eight of these ten songs were recorded with Van Zandt playing solo with his guitar. All of them are quite revealing not just for the obvious lyric and melody reasons, but for his guitar playing abilities; he was a considerable flatpicking talent and picked up his idol’s, fellow Houstonian Lightin’ Hopkins’ trademark stutter shuffle as well. The blues are as present Van Zandt’s tunes as folk and country were. Check the set’s opening track “Black Widow’s Blues,” one of two songs recorded with a full backing band; the other is the stellar “Hunger Child Blues.”

Zandt, Townes Van - No Deeper Blue Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title No Deeper Blue
Label Fat Possum
(1995) Van Zandt’s subject matter had not changed much in the seven years between recordings, as was apparent only a few lines into the leadoff track, "A Song For," when Van Zandt spoke-sang, "I’m weak and I’m weary of sorrow." In fact, he wasn’t weary of enumerating the causes of sorrow, as was proven especially in "Marie," sung in the voice of a derelict whose life gets worse and worse until his pregnant girlfriend dies. Songs like that were typical of Van Zandt, but this time he also displayed an unusual range, from the scary, calypso-like song of temptation "The Hole" to the weird tall tale of "Billy, Boney and Ma" in which a man and a skeleton turn to a life of crime, demonstrating Van Zandt’s humorous side.

Zandt, Townes Van - Rearview Mirror Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title Rear View Mirror
Label Fat Possum
Van Zandt, the original Texas Troubadour, courted death most of his life. One of his earliest songs was called "Waitin’ Round To Die", and he titled one of his albums THE LATE GREAT TOWNES VAN ZANDT. So when a lifetime of hard living finally caught up with him on New Year’s Day 1997, the grim visions that made up his oeuvre seemed like nothing so much as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Though the 1993 live album REAR VIEW MIRROR was on Sugar Hill’s reissue schedule for months prior to the singer’s death, its release only weeks afterward has left the album with a eulogistic feel. The songs on REAR VIEW MIRROR brim with wit, wisdom and striking poetic imagery. The sound is a combination of Hank Williams’ haunted wail and Bob Dylan’s surreal balladry.

Zandt, Townes Van - The Late Great Townes Van Zandt Artist Townes Van Zandt
Title The Late Great Townes Van Zandt
Label Omnivore
This is the second perfect album Van Zandt cut in 1972, a complement to High, Low and in Between. Together they contain the highest points of his brilliant but erratic career. The Late Great may be a bit stronger, with classics like "Pancho & Lefty," "No Lonesome Tune," and "If I Needed You," but there’s not a weak track here. Van Zandt’s voice is in top shape, the song selection is superb, and Jack Clement’s understated production gives the tunes a timeless quality.

Zandt, Townes Van / Various - Poet Artist Various Artists / Townes Van Zandt,
Title Poet - A Tribute To Townes Van Zandt
Label Fat Possum
Tribute collections -- especially those dedicated to a deceased artist by a various group of performers -- are usually a mixed bag by their very nature. A dedicated various-artists set of songs by the towering songwriter Townes Van Zandt is even more daunting in concept. That said, Poet: A Tribute to Townes Van Zandt, originally issued in 2001, is the exception to the rule in every case. Containing 16 cuts by a stellar cast that includes everyone from Willie Nelson and Nanci Griffith to Lucinda Williams and John Prine with lots of folks in between. Other performers include two songwriters who have done their own full-length tributes to Van Zandt’s genius: Jonell Mosser (whose wonderful Around Townes was the very first, issued in the ’90s) and Steve Earle (whose own 2009 album, Townes, is classic in the genre). Nelson appears opens the album with an utterly believable reading of the harrowing "Marie." Guy Clark’s tender and moving "To Live Is to Fly" is performed with the requisite wisdom and eagle eye vision he gives his own songs.
