Darkstar - Foam Island Artist Darkstar
Title Foam Island
Label Warp
‘Foam Island’, the third studio album from Darkstar, is a beautiful contemporary electronic pop album that deals with powerful themes of ambition and hope against the odds in the 21st Century.

Since their early dancefloor 12”s on Hyperdub from 2008 and through two vocal-led albums in 2010 and 2013, Darkstar have been an influential force in the UK’s electronic scene.

During trips to visit family in Northern England, founder members Aiden Whalley and James Young noticed a change in the area’s social atmosphere. This climate began to increasingly influence the duo’s writing sessions and they began a three month project of documenting this by talking to local young people in nearby Huddersfield. The lyrics and the sound palette for ‘Foam Island’ were shaped by the people and emotions they encountered and their recordings of interviewees’ speech have been compellingly woven into the tracks.

For fans of Jon Hopkins, Zomby, Four Tet, Mount Kimbie, Roisín Murphy, Actress, Floating Points.

DAT Politics - Mad Kit Artist DAT Politics
Title Mad Kit
Label Chicks On Speed
I got this bit of info from the DAT politics site, and I’ve put it up here verbatim cos it sounds so ace, including all the cute bits with wonky spelling:
"France favorite electro chiptune pioneers DAT politics did it again !! This brand new album brings a kind of straight beat propulsion in their gloriously catchy, melodic and eminently danceable music. An express shot of playful, booty, shaking dance synth pop ripe with digitalized vocals , distorded breaks and electric frequencies which put them on a luxury spot in the international electronic map. Mad Kit creates its own hyperactiv sound and a solid body of tracks that should be in heavy rotation and rock the brain dance parties all over the world."

Dawn Of Midi - Dysnomia Artist Dawn Of Midi
Title Dysnomia
Label Erased Tapes
Channelled madness – the sound Dawn of Midi spent years shaping is culminating into their most mesmerising work yet.

With Dysnomia, the Brooklyn-based group Dawn of Midi abandons improvisation in favour of composition, utilising sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. From close up one may see only dots, but when stepping back an undulating image reveals itself. “We didn’t want to create anything cerebral,” says Belyamani, “we wanted something visceral, something that would awaken our instinctive dance impulses.”

DEAF CENTER - Owl Splinters Artist DEAF CENTER
Title Owl Splinters
Label TYPE
* PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LIMITED VINYL EDITION COMES WITH A BONUS 45 MINUTE ALBUM (on CD) OF EXTRA MATERIAL

* In contrast to Skodvin and Totland’s previous work, ‘Owl Splinters’ was recorded in a studio setting (Nils Frahm’s Durton studio, to be exact), and the lo-fidelity, haphazard techniques of their early recordings are now all but gone. With the benefit of some high-end engineering and analogue equipment, Skodvin and Totland’s murky compositions have been transformed from sketches into glorious widescreen spectacles. The blackened, scraping tone of Skodvin’s strings ring out on the album’s opener ‘Divided’ before seismic bass drones push up from beneath with a cacophonous, earthy clarity. This is the same Deaf Center we fell in love with all those years ago, but bigger and more powerful than ever before.

Dean and Britta - 13 Most Beatiful Songs for Andy Warhol Artist Dean and Britta
Title 13 Most Beatiful Songs for Andy Warhol
Label Double Feature
Limited Edition of 3,000, 12 page booklet with liner notes by Dean Wareham and still images from films by Andy Warhol. This project was initially commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Dean & Britta created 13 songs and instrumentals to perform live in a multimedia show, with Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests projected on a large screen above the band as they play. The screen tests are short, silent portrait films made by Warhol at the Factory between 1964 and 1966 -- of actors, dancers, artists, and Factory regulars. Each film is 4:15 in length. Dean & Britta selected 13 subjects (including Dennis Hopper, Nico, Lou Reed) and recorded 8 songs and 5 instrumentals for them. These are original studio recordings, produced by Dean & Britta, with additional remixes by Scott Hardkiss, Sonic Boom (MGMT, Spacemen 3) and My Robot Friend. Songs are a mix of originals and covers including Bob Dylan’s I’ll Keep It With Mine and the Velvet Underground’s Not a Young Man Anymore.

Deerhoof - Deerhoof V. Evil Artist Deerhoof
Title Deerhoof Vs. Evil
Label ATP
’Deerhoof Vs. Evil’ is the tenth studio release from San Francisco outfit Deerhoof. The band, formed in 1994, recorded the whole album independently in basements and practice spaces. The freedom of self-recording allowed them to experiment with each other’s instruments and results in a polished and innovative record. Including an obscure cover of a Greek instrumental soundtrack ’Let’s Dance The Jet’, the album indicates a coming of age for the band.

DJ ROC - The Crack Capone Artist DJ ROC
Title The Crack Capone
Label Planet Mu
Over the course of the album’s 20 tracks, DJ Roc shows off his brilliant high-speed sparse manipulations of rhythm, space and sound; as in the dancehall influenced tracks such as opener ‘One Blood’ or ’Kill Da Bitch’ to tracks which mix a heavy techno influence like ‘Make Crack Like Dis‘ or mix it with Hip hop samples like ‘King Of The Circle. Then there are tracks that mix smooth soul with double-speed like ‘I Can’t Control The Feeling’, to tracks which have more of a classic Juke feel like ‘ Get Buck Jones’ and ‘DJ Roc Symphony’. The album is full of brilliant production and original ideas.

Donato Wharton / A White Rainbow Spanning The Dark Artist Donato Wharton
Title A White Rainbow Spanning The Dark (10")
Label Serein

Donato Wharton is a composer based in London, UK. He has previously released three records for the Manchester and Berlin record label, City Centre Offices.
Born in Cardiff and raised in Germany, Donato continues to travel extensively with his work as sound designer for stage and theatre productions. The influence of these journeys can be read in his chosen track titles; together, they evoke a sense of great distance and expanse.

By pushing the limits of his tools of creation, primarily guitar and field recordings, Donato introduces swathes of noise into his compositions, shaping it as a sculptor chisels stone to form topographies of often rugged terrains, blustery, cold and unforgiving. The startling opening to ’In A Mute Scape’ has you standing in the middle of a vast plain, your voice long lost to the wind, ringing in your ears.

6 track 10"
a1donato wharton / a vast white solitude
a2donato wharton / ink mountains
a3donato wharton / a thousand miles of grass
b1donato wharton / in a mute scape
b2donato wharton / breath held
b3donato wharton / mind like a snow cloud
